If they can do it...

A wise writer once said to me
"There's no such thing as writer's block.
Only writer's embarrassment."

Words to live and write by.

In which I find new paradigms...

Ok, time to hit that reset button again.

I'm following a new plan. I read this cool article about how to plan a book in a fractal fashion, and I'm giving it a try. It appeals to the geek in me, as well as looking like a sound way to plan a book. I think I'll keep track of the results here for a while, so look for once a week updates. My new plan: get this fractal plan going with the book I tried to write for the first NaNo, and start from scratch for this year's NaNo. I think I can consider it a new book-- I got almost nowhere with it that time (2000 words or so, 99% of which was backstory anyway).

I'm meeting a friend once a week at Borders to discuss our progress. We're working through the fractal plan together with our respective book ideas. The plan is to have all the background work done in time for this year's NaNo. And then we hit the actual writing hard during NaNo!

So, the first step is the short sentence that defines your book. Here's the one I've finally settled on:
A boy journeys to an alternate world to rid himself of his guilt and sorrow.

But, as I explained to my friend, the devil is in the details!! With the planning and the energy concept, I am hoping that third time's the charm...

I read that a band I like (Keane) is going to play at a Borders in Chi this summer. If it's the one you go to, definitely check them out.

And a post! Yay! I do not think I'll be doing NaNo any time soon ;)

The one I go to is not in the downtown area, but I'll keep an eye out for them.

I've actually been advised against doing NaNo, as I don't write afterwards for months. Thing is, I'm not exactly, despite all best intentions, doing much writing outside of it. NaNo seems to be the only time I seem to get any writing done at all...

Either way, a steading stream of book planning is probably a good idea ;)
